The usual Championship T-shirt saw an improvement this year. Reebok has made this year’s shirt “Eco-Friendly”, by using 100% organic cotton.
Reactions to the shirt have been mixed.
- Some have criticized the NFL for jumping on the “green bandwagon” as a marketing gimmick, citing the league’s enormous carbon footprint and other eco-shortcomings.
- Others point out that the NFL did purchase some renewable energy for the big game, has pledged to reuse/recycle some of the Super Bowl banners, and is taking part in some reforestation projects. In fact, the NFL developed an entire program to “to minimize the impact of Super Bowl activities on the local and global environment.”
Food for thought: Do intentions and other perhaps seemingly hypocritical eco-imperfections really matter if the actions are a step in a greener direction?
I think it is great that the Super Bowl is introducing eco-friendly championship t-shirts. A lot of people watch the Super Bowl and because NFL is beginning to try and help the environment, this could affect the viewers too. It could change many of the audience’s opinions recycling and re-using things. I really don't know why anyone would criticize the NFL for doing this. I think that is just ridiculous! They are helping and trying to improve the earth. Why would someone not want them to carry on with this? I love how NFL is now taking part in making a difference. Just recycling the banners can do a lot in the environment. I would like to hear more about what projects they are getting involved in that deal with restoration. Super Bowl should show more commercials and activities because it could be like an example for others to do also. This will help get the message through to more people and if it keeps continuing, it will definitely spread more awareness.

to see what else the NFL is doing.
The NFL purchased it's renewable energy from the Salt River Project (SRP), who in turn purchased it from Public Service New Mexico (PNM). PNM operates several hundred wind turbines in what is considered a "Red-zone" for wind energy production, these turbines produce enough electricity to power 94,000 homes. PNM also is responsible for oversight of the electrical generation stations in the area to ensure they meet ISO-14001. If the NFL purchased the electricity used for the big game from renewable sources then they are not only doing the environment a service but they are doing a service to their audiences in the areas where wind energy production is possible. By purchasing clean energy they further the effort to research and get renewable energy sources online. This is a good example of the NFL supporting a couple of companies that have the environment's and the people's best interest in mind, now just imagine if they reduced player salary by 10% and invested it renewable energy infrastructure and research.
ReplyDeleteI think the NFL getting involved in environmental issues is a great idea. Really, anyone being interested in protecting the environment and our natural resources is a fantastic thing, but for big strong macho men to support the cause, it could cause other people to imitate their actions as well. Many people follow celebrities footsteps, and so people may start recycling just because their favorite player supports it, but along the way, they'll learn new things and possibly come to understand the severity of our actions if we don't learn to replenish and restore our resources. While some groups may criticize the NFL for going green simply for publicity, at least they're doing it! And while they haven't always been known to promote or even practice environmentally friendly issues, they're starting right now, and we hope they will continue in doing so.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think it is great that the NFL is making a step in the right direction, making green choices, because as we have learned that a little bit can go a long way when concerned with our environment. Every amount, big or small, adds up; it’s the only way to begin working towards a cleaner and more sustainable earth. I know many people would disagree with this because although they are "making some eco-friendly decisions", most believe that with how large the network is and how much time and effort is put into it, they could make a bigger and more effective contribution. Some believe the NFL is only jumping on the green bandwagon for marketing; so a question to think about: If you truly care about the environment, what’s wrong with them doing it for those reasons if it is getting done. I would hope that their efforts are true to help and not just a greenwashing scam. Making the NFL shirts organic cotton T-shirts is a great way to start, as well as using renewable energy. I think that any reduce, reuse, recycle statement made by the NFL could spawn their audience to change their opinions and possibly try new things. My biggest question and hope for the NFL at this point is to spread the green throughout the industry. If they are going to do it at the Super Bowl, why not do it at all NFL games and events? No matter the green efforts made by the NFL, I think it would be absurd to criticize that they are trying even if you do not think they are doing enough. You have to start somewhere!
ReplyDeleteThe NFL is one of the most watched sports in the country. The Fact that they are
ReplyDeletetaking steps towards helping the environment is phenomenal, and is really good
for the public to see. Because the NFL is so widely viewed they can have an
effect on a lot of people and could play a major role in winning over the public
to an eco-friendly side. The?eco-friendly?shirt and the renewable energy are
fantastic and I hope that the NFL will continue to jump on the "green
bandwagon." I also hope that they will encourage other sports like NASCAR to put
on the environmental thinking cap.
I think that other programs like the NBA or NASCAR or even the MBL should start doing more like this. If all of the major sports programs did this then we would be helping our selves out greatly. Not only could the major sports programs do this but then major companies like Wal-Mart and Target should try to make there stores 'green'. They should try to sell 'green' products and clothing.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more with you guys. I can't believe that people would criticize them for what they're doing right now. They really do have to start somewhere and what better way to start than to recycle banners?! I am very impressed to see the NFL taking the initative to go green. Even if they're just doing it for attention or for publicity, at least it'll get people thinking/considering going green. If people see their icons, their idols, doing something advantageous for the environment, then they might too, and isn't that the whole point?
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty insane how much influence celebrities and athletes have over today's generation-whether it's positive or negative. But like Spencer said, hopefully other sports like NASCAR, NBA, MLB, etc. will join them.
Wow. People are actually criticizing the NFL for wanting to help the environment? They're really naive and need to wake up. Yeah, this "going green" is a trend, but it's a good one.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful the NFL is doing this. Football is the most watched sport in America, and I guarantee you almost every America watches the Superbowl. They hold a lot of influence over the American public, and are setting a great example. They are sticking up for what is right, and encouraging others to do the same. I hope more companies/people jump on the "green bandwagon".
Going green is starting to become very popular which is great and they're is no better way to make it's popularity go up by involving it with the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl has millions of viewrs and thing oh they won't realize the Super Bowl is going green because I mean who watches commercials?! But no that's not the case because the commercials are the best and most entertaining part! So that way everybody will get the news that the Super Bowl is goint green and they'll think hey maybe I should be doing this too. That's really unessisary that some people are critisizing the Super Bowl for growing green. Everybody should be applauding any and everything that is going green to help save the earth. I think that big orginizations similar to the Super Bowl should go green as well.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the Super Bowl is going "green" mainly as a publicity stunt. Going green and trying to help the environment is a good thing, but I think that many people are still doing it for the wrong reasons. Going "green" is what is in and if your not going "green" that you're not doing what is cool. It's kind of like peer pressure, a good kind of peer pressure, but peer pressure nonetheless. I'm not complaining, I just want it to be realized that a lot of people going green is just for the recognition, not for the purpose of saving the planet. It doesn't really matter how we go about saving the planet as long as it is being done.
ReplyDeleteI think that the NFL is going "green" to make themselves look good. I do think this is a great idea because they are adopting something that others could jump on the bandwagon and also start doing. Maybe the NFL is jumping on a bandwagon. The super bowl is one of the most watched sporting events all year and this could really help out going "green". Many of other people will jump on this bandwagon and will help out the environment. This little idea about T-shirts could go a long way in recycling and recycled goods. I am curious to see what goes on in the future with this.
ReplyDeleteHow in the world can people criticize the NFL for going green? Even if they were and are doing this as a marketing gimmick, it sure is a better way then what it could be. With as many people who go to super bowl games, throw parties, or simply watch the NFL games on television, I think this is a smart way to promote some of world’s biggest environment problems and what a cool way of doing so by designing an “organic” t-shirt. I know I would feel proud to wear a shirt like this. It is such a small change, but I think it could go a long way, along with all the other things the NFL is doing to better world by going green. I, unlike others, commend the NFL for going this route, maybe all the other sports or leagues will hop on the band-wagon with this one.
ReplyDeleteThe NFL is one of the most watched programs in the United States ever! Going green and trying to do better for the environment is just one big giant step in helping the earth. Putting ideas in people’s heads to try to educate them on something as little as a buying an organic tee shirt. Even if people are saying that they are doing this for a marketing gimmick at least they are promoting it and spreading the word that something is going to have to be done to help the earth. Like Tommy said the NFL might be jumping on a major bandwagon to go “green” but if that’s what it takes then let them jump as high as possible. Hopefully other big organizations like the NFL will see what this is doing to help out and they will also realize that they should be doing the same for mother earth. ☺
ReplyDeleteI think that with the NFL 'going green,' that it will inspire more to become green, such as fans and sponsors. I understand that many are just now recognizing the fact that we need to do something about our impact on the Earth, but why bash on those who are actually trying, a lot of people are acting like it's a bad thing to jump on the 'green' bandwagon, when actually, it's more of a positive thing. It's also prety neat that the NFL adopted an entire program to advocate being green, and becoming more green in everyday life. They're advertising that they too are helping reduce their carbon footprint. They are reusing banners, and using organic cotton for shirts which is cool, I think I could contribute to helping our environment by wearing organic clothes, but with a whole football team, I'm sure it makes a lot of a difference.
ReplyDeletei agree with Dani on this one. So many people watch the NFL games, if they were going green then most people will want to do the same :) i think it's cool that they are making their shirts out of organic cotton. kari
ReplyDeleteI is cool how the nfl is attemping to go green that is the most watched show on teleivison today. It could really inspire other sport related organizations. I cant even imagine how many of the t-shirt they sold in the super bowl. I think this could really help the nfl makes a good impact on other assoications
