Sprint is now offering a phone that is 80% recyclable.
So What???
- “Electronic waste is a fast growing category of municipal solid waste?
- “Nearly 3 million tons of consumer electronic waste was generated in 2003 alone, according to the most recent U.S. EPA estimates?”
- "It's estimated that there are over 130 million cell phones retired in the U.S.? “

“The eco-friendly, socially conscious, always networking phone.” is now available from Sprint.
The Reclaim is made of 80% recyclable materials. 40% of the Reclaim’s casing consists of bio-plastic materials made from corn. It comes with a decent array of applications and features and sells for about $50 after rebates with the usual strings attached. $2 of that price is donated to the Nature Conservancy’s adopt an acre program. The site also mentions “one-click access to eco-friendly applications and information”, and 100% recyclable packaging. Check it out at http://green.sprint.com/reclaim.php
I think the new Reclaim is a wonderful cell phone. It’s cute, functional, and has all the things you could ask for. Teenagers (and parents) would definitely want a phone like this, since it’s perfect for everyday use and not at all expensive. Also, who knew you could make plastic out of CORN? That’s just pretty crazy amazing. Since new cell phones are being released each YEAR, I think that Sprint should keep making more new phones that are durable, eye-pleasing and recyclable. This new trend will hopefully be catching on, and cell phone producers will too. Also, I do think more money should be donated to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt an Acre Program, but two dollars is a good start X D. For the throwing away of electronics, I think that’s just stupid. I mean, you could give or sell it to a person who can fix computers/cell phones or you could probably give it to a organization who fixes computers and sends them overseas, or in cell phone sakes, recycles them and sells them to other people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nou and think that this phone would be great. It is very cute and its even my favorite color. A cell phone made out of corn is also very interesting. Since it is biodegradable then I guess it wouldnt hurt for you to just throw it away. This phone has everything that other phones have such as the GPS, video, and alot of other applications that people use everyday. I personally use Sprint so the fact that they were the ones to create this actually makes me consider it. The only thing i would change about it would be to have the Nextel part with it but other than that it would be very efficient for me. I also agree with Nou that people shouldnt necessarily throw away their elctronics because you could sell them to people who could use them. Many people just keep them and then never use them again so they usually end up in the trash and they wont break down unless they have the Reclaim. The Nature Conservancy's Adopt an Acre Program seems like it would be a good program so yes I think that donating the two dollars would be good.
ReplyDeleteI think that this new 'green' phone is an excellent step toward a more green planet. It seems that 'being green' has just now become a major concern, and Sprint has made a leap toward doing just that. I personally do not use Sprint network, but I'm sure there are many people who would switch networks for solely this reason. I wonder why this has just now came about, and I wonder if other cellphone providers will also take the same step Sprint has and also create more environmentally friendly technological devices...I like the fact that the Reclaim is less expensive than most modern day cell phones, and included in the $50 price, is a $2 donation to the Nature Conservancy Adopt and Acre Program, which really can add up to great amounts if enough of these phones are sold. Along with this phone being adorable, it serves a good cause; if I were a Sprint user, i would deffinately look into purchasing this phone. Hopefully, Verizon Wireless and many other cell phone networks will join Sprint in making more environmentally friendly, cost-efficient phones.
ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure how I feel about this phone? Being the first green cell phone on the market, I would expect it to have many flaws, but then again which phone doesn’t? This phone has many handy and necessary applications for many people in today’s society, including myself. Cell phone companies are always out to get all the money they can from you, this being just another easy way. Perceived obsolescence is a key character shown through-out this advertisement. Why rush out to be a brand new phone if yours is still in working condition? Then wouldn’t that just waste even more recourses? I think the idea of a green phone is one step further in helping to over-come some of our environmental problems and concerns today, but may be not completely thought through. I believe that a green cell phone should replace broken or non-working phones as needed!
ReplyDeleteI think this new cell phone is a great idea. If it truly is 80% recyclable it could really help to cut out on all the electronic waste. Our society today is producing more technology than ever before. New cell phones and ipods come out every six months. And everyone wants the latest and greatest technology. We are dumping our old technology out as fast as the new technology can come in. Why should we trash our perfectly good technology just to get the newest version? I think the green phone is a great way to help reduce our technology waste. The green phone is affordable and has everything you need in a phone. The only thing im concerned over is whether there are any flaws to it. With it being the first green phone to come out I would expect there to be a few flaws. If other companies would come out with the same types of phones or figure out a way to make the phones they already have recyclable I think this could be a great step to making the world a greener place!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this phone is seriously cool. It has everything that today's public is looking for. It has all the things that are cool like the full keyboard, texting, internet, and camera. I would buy one, its cool looking and it also is made up of 80% recycled materials. Also, if a person feels the need to throw out a cell phone every six months, then this would be the one to buy. Its affordable and its made of recyclable material, which means it will degrade in landfills. I also, agree with Courtney about the flaws. This phone seems great on paper, but I wonder if there is something they are not telling us about this amazing phone. Like does it fall apart after using for a while. I still have my concerns about this phone, such as flaws and if it really is biodegradable, and I would buy one just to see if it really is as great as it sounds.
ReplyDeleteI think this is pretty cool. I never thought people would actually be able to make a cell phone out of recycled materials but i guess it is possible. If i could go out and buy this phone I am pretty sure i would. It has all the features that regular phones have today. What is even cooler is that it is made up of 80% recycled materials. I am sure that there are a few things that have to be fixed for this phone to be a big hit on the market but don't most phones have that when they first come out too? If you are quite picky about phones I advise you not to get this phone because it is the first generation of this kind. So hopefully in the future this phone will be a big hit and really be a boom in the cell phone industry.
ReplyDeleteThe reclaim phone is pretty awesome. Being able to have a phone that is made up of recycled materials is amazing, who ever thought? Although the advertising for this phone is not working at all. The only way I probably would have heard about it would be through you or if I decided I wanted to do research on it. For people to be interested in buying something like this, advertising is very important. This was a great idea and hopefully we will start being able to make all phones and other appliances out of recycled things. The phone is cute and very attractive which is bringing in hope for consumers, who wants to buy an ugly phone? Having all of the features a regular phone has is important. Like Tommy said every new phone out there has a bit of trouble when you first buy it so I wouldn’t go out and buy the first one. Hopefully we will be able to produce more cell phones like this soon!
ReplyDeleteI think the new green phone is a great idea and will hopefully make people notice that global warming is a major issue. Not only is the phone 80% recyclable it's also affordable and it's a phone i would want to have. Why they are just coming out with a green phone in 2009 is beyond me because we have the resources and technology to make many products that we use daily recyclable. I think many people would actually switch to the sprint network because of the concept and because everyone seems to be going green. In my opinion i think every cell phone company should make there phones out of corn or another substitute. It would make a huge impact in saving our earth and i think the cell phone industry would boom because everyone would want the new and latest phone. This could also maybe help out our economic crisis too.
ReplyDeleteThis green phone is a good way to improve the environment simply because it is 80% recyclable. Although recycling isnt enough to save the environment, it is a start. It is also a plus that it has apps that are related to recycling. Many people don't recycle cause they don't know where, or how, or other details, and if this phone provided them with some of that information then more people may recycle. That may not end up being true, but isn't it worth a try if it may help the environment a little?
