Campout! Carolina

Earth Share North Carolina is encouraging residents to show support for North Carolina’s environment by camping out the weekend of October 9th. This is the 3rd annual Campout! Carolina. Last year over 2,000 people took part in this event.

“Pitch a tent in your backyard or favorite North Carolina campsite, turn off or unplug non-essential electrical items, and enjoy an evening outdoors with family and friends.”

When you register to be counted at the event site you’ll also be entered to win 2 four day passes to the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance or a sweet tent from REI. The event site even can even help you find a place to camp.

If you don’t have camping gear, the kind folks at REI are “offering free rental of camping gear including tents, sleeping bags and backpacks on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here to find the REI near you.”

Early October is a great time for camping, and it sounds like a great way to spend the weekend!

  1. This is AWESOME! Even though I’ve never been camping it sounds like something that I would really enjoy. Before my brother passed he went to a campground in Ashville, NC. Him and his friends enjoyed an epic weekend outdoors at a music festival. John and I were planning on going camping this fall actually and I think that I might just have to take you up on this offer and go without him. Being able to spend time with the people you love is awesome and I think that there is no better way to do that other than camping. Being able to keep all electronics away for just one night is so refreshing. The people at REI are doing a wonderful thing by letting people rent for free that is very kind and something I might have to take advantage of! Thanks for this blog its pretty cool I have never heard about it until now. ☺

  2. I think that the suggestion of Campout! Carolina is an awesome one. This event encourages families to campout and spend a weekend outdoors and away from anything that consumes energy. I personally do not know if I could handle this, but it's a great idea. Not only does it conserve energy, but it gives your family time to bond and become closer, which is always a good thing. If your family decides to participate in this campout weekend, registering at campoutcarolina.org can win you and your family two, four day passes to Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance or a snazzy tent from REI. Visiting this site can also help aid you in finding a camping location. REI is also offering free rentals of camping gear, this includes tents, tents, and backpacks, but the early bird catches the worm; I think this is great way to encourage people to participate especially since they will not have to purchase items for something they may only do once. I think the Campout! Carolina is a great idea, and I hope more than 2,000 people participate this year.

  3. This is a great idea. I think I might do it too. I definitely won’t be able to get my mom and dad to do it. I have a really big tent and a mummy bag that I just got last Christmas and have only used once. I wish I had a telescope then I could do it right. REI is expensive, so some free stuff from there would be sweet. I could get my brother in Canada to do it, even though he isn’t in the state.

  4. This is seriously cool, I have never been camping. But I've always wanted to go. My parents would never be up for this. But I think this is a really cool event. Families getting out of the house, leaving behind technology for a little while and enjoying the environment. Last years turn out was a big success all of those people not using energy for an entire night. Imagine if a whole lot more people decided to do this and then more energy was saved. I know I am all about saving energy. I actually went and changed every light bulb in the house to an energy efficient light bulb. So I'm all about saving energy.106 But this campground thing is all kinds of cool. I would do it, and if we all did it and asked our friends to join in, just imagine how much energy we could save. It would probably be a lot.

  5. I know that this blog is kind of old, but I have to say that I really like the idea of Campout! Carolina. Personally, I enjoy camping and I think others should try it! Although when I say camping, I mean tent camping, not trailer camping. My family falls under the trailer campers category. I do enjoy trailer camping, but it’s basically camping in a small house, and still consumes a lot of energy. Sometimes I’m happy when I’m camping and can take a shower before I go to bed, but I like to camp in a tent as well. When I go camping with friends, it’s usually in a tent. I think that camping in a tent is cool because you don’t really use electricity, or gas stoves, or other things that harm the environment. Anyways, Campout! Carolina is a good way to encourage residents of South Carolina to help out the environment! It’s also awesome how they have prizes you could win when you sign up, and they’ll even help you find a place to camp. Camping can be great family bonding time, so everyone should join Campout! Carolina when it comes around next time.

  6. Even though this article is from October I agree that this would be a great idea to do for the next year. As said in the article you can "enjoy an evening outdoors with family and friends", away from all the noise and electronics. My family and I use to go camping all the time on an island, we would go out on our boat have fun then go dock at the island and pitch our tents. I couldn't believe that when they said that REI would allow free rentals to a limited number of people I thing that’s great that they are helping out in there own way. If everyone joined in on an event like this all over the world just once a year imagine how much energy we could conserve just from that one nigh. Maybe when the next Campout! Carolina comes around my family and I might join in on the fun.

  7. I am kind of embarrassed to say that I have never been camping before. I live in a house surrounded by huge, open fields, and somehow I have never been camping. There have been times that I wished I was doing it, usually summer nights when my dad won't turn the air conditioner on and I know that anywhere would be cooler than where I am trying to sleep. I think it would be a lot of fun to be out there under the stars, sleeping in the fresh air. Maybe I have never been camping because 1) We don't own a tent and 2) Our dogs would probably invade this tent as soon as we set it up. These are lame excuses, but I also am kind of worried about the potential spiders and waking up with the sun and being sore from the ground. Maybe I missed those golden years where camping would have been fun, where if we had done it, it might have caught on. Either way, I think Campout! Carolina is a great idea. I think it would be fantastic if everyone would do it and save that much energy, although it might have trouble catching on. Families with younger children are probably more prone to go camping, but, still, every little bit counts!

  8. Abby,
It's never too late to start camping. It's a great time, and hopefully events like this will encourage people like yourself to start camping.
