Clemson to Offer New Undergraduate Degree in Environmental Engineering.

"Clemson University will offer a new bachelor of science degree in environmental engineering, the first of its kind in South Carolina, this fall."

“The new degree should help keep the best and brightest students here in South Carolina to pursue their education,” he said. “We are facing serious environmental issues in the future, such as contaminated water supplies, hazardous wastes, increasing populations and limited resources. We need a highly trained workforce ready to tackle environmental issues. This technical and challenging program is led by world-class faculty dedicated to providing the best possible educational experience.”

  1. The above link (http://www.clemson.edu/media-relations/article.php?article_id=2578) says this degree will teach students how to protect and improve water and air quality. This is something that grows more and more important to our country everyday. This is an exciting idea considering it is the first like it in South Carolina. I think that the need for these jobs will be increasing for a while because it is going to take a long time to undo what we have done on the basis of hazardous waste and limited resources. And since our population is only going to get bigger, even more people need to be educated on making the right choice for the world around them. As a result of the creation of this degree, hopefully there will be more jobs available around here to help us solve these problems. It is nice to know that South Carolina will soon be able to contribute even more to the health of our environment.

  2. Having an environmental engineering degree at Clemson sounds great especially for those that like have an interest in it. one plus about this is that students that want to major in this and live in south Carolina wont have to go farther or even out of state, and if they go out of state they will have to pay even more for there education. One thing that I agree with Abby about is that there will hopefully be more jobs available because of this. What would be really sad is if they don’t have more jobs in this field here and people major in it and pay all that money and then they will most likely have to move to a place were they have jobs for that degree.

  3. This is a great idea for Clemson University. I think that an environmental undergraduate program will be very helpful because with the way the world is now; many people want to become something that will help the environment. A lot of students hope to get into Clemson, so other schools may follow in their footsteps because they see how popular Clemson is. I also hope that there will be careers in this field just like Abby and Michelle were saying. I think Michelle had a good point about the staying in state thing as well.

  4. It is a great addition to an already wonderful school. Clemson University is well known for its agriculture program and they are only doing better for themselves by adding this major. Another college that offers this kind of thing is the Collge of Charleston and there, you can also get a masters degree. But I am glad that colleges are adding these kinds of things because this will raise awareness to people about being more environmentally friendly.

  5. CLEMSON UNIVERSITY — Clemson University will offer a bachelor of science degree in environmental engineering, the first of its kind in South Carolina, this fall.

Tanju Karanfil, environmental engineering professor and department chairman, said the new program fills a niche.

“The new degree should help keep the best and brightest students here in South Carolina to pursue their education,” he said. “We are facing serious environmental issues in the future, such as contaminated water supplies, hazardous wastes, increasing populations and limited resources. We need a highly trained work force ready to tackle environmental issues.”Environmental engineers protect water quality by designing water and wastewater treatment systems. They help ensure public safety by managing solid, hazardous and radioactive wastes and improve air quality by devising solutions to air pollution. They also reduce human health risks by tracking contaminants as they move through the environment and design a more sustainable future by understanding the use of resources.

Job opportunities in environmental engineering are worldwide in governments, water utilities, engineering consulting firms and industry. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a faster than average growth rate for the field in the next 10 years.

The university's departments of environmental engineering and earth sciences and biosystems engineering will collaborate on the program. The program also will include an opportunity for a five-year BS/MS degree.

Clemson has master and doctoral programs in environmental engineering and science. The graduate program has consistently been ranked among the top 20 programs nationwide among public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report.

  6. I think this is great for all the people who have an interest in the envirnment. This will bring more people to the college and hopefully draw some attention to get some more information out to the public. Because most people don't understand how big of a problem the envirment really is. I think it's great that South Carolina is going to have something like this for the first time.

  7. this is a good idea for Clemson because with all of the environmental problems, this would be a way for people to get out there and help people "go green". Clemson has well educated students that will learn this program well and make it effective. kari
