Want to know the closest place to recycle a car battery? Need to know where to dispose of CFLs? Then head over to www.earth911.com. Enter your location and what you are trying to recycle and get pointed in the right direction. Have an iPhone? Try out the iRecyle App (shown above and available in the app store). Both the site and the app also list local events, and articles.
This website is great, but is easily accessible to the general public? Does it show up on google? Plus, just because there is an application for the iPhone, that does not guaranty people will purchase it. Ergo, if people cannot find it immediately, then most will not search through the apps to find. Who is the target audience for the website and/or the app?
ReplyDeleteThis is a really cool website. My family produces waste just as any other American family and I do get concerned about where it goes. We currently have 3 broken printers sitting in our basement. We don't really want to throw them in the dump, because they obviously won't end up in an ideal place. Of course, we don't want to keep them because we don't use them. By searching this website, I found that we can take them to Best Buy, Staples, and Goodwill, or any other recycling centers listed. I think we can get rid of those printers now that we know they won't go straight to a landfill. We pass by a lot of these places every week, we just didn't know that they recycled these products. I have actually been wondering if a website like this existed and now that I know it does, I am really excited about using it. I think this could really help the environment if people just took a second to look up where they can dispose of their goods that are not so environmentally friendly. It would also help the people who use it, because, like our family, we can finally get rid of those meaningless things we just couldn't throw away. I really, really like this website. I am putting it in my favorites list right now.
ReplyDeleteI can understand what Shea is talking about when she says that people will not go searching for this website. It is true that most people will not look any further than a quick google search. When I say a quick google search I mean typing one thing into the google search bar. I decided to test how difficult it would be to find this website. I went to google and typed in “Places to recycle” and Earth911.com was the first website that came up! (Well besides the 2 in the orange box, but I don’t count those.) I was very excited when I saw that it was the number one site because that means that it is pretty easy to find. I also tested the website to see if it could name a place to recycle anything. I typed in things such as computers, boxes, cans, car parts, floppy disks, paint, and even nail polish. Every new thing I tried, the site had at least one place listed where you could recycle it. I think this website was a very good idea!
ReplyDeleteI also understand were Shea is coming from, but if someone recycles and has an iphone then I believe they will go and search for apps that have to do with recycling. Having a website is even better if they don’t have an iphone then they can just go on the computer. With this around people wont have to try as hard to dispose of something like a car batter and because it is so easy then people will actually use it, when something is to difficult they just give up. One thing Shea said was can you find it on Google, even if you don’t find this website I do believe that you can find on that is like it, and it can be used by anyone that knows how to use a computer even a little kid if you make it fun for them to recycle then they will always do it, like letting them look things up on the computer or an iphone if you have one.
ReplyDeleteI like this website! My family has tried to be more environmentally friendly but we've struggled with recycling electronics and aluminums. I'm really excited to show this site to my family so we can feel better about where our waste goes.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I'm unsure of how many people are aware of this site or even care. A lot of the population is either unaware of how to recycle or they don't care. Some people think it's a hassle to make the effort to recycle. I think we should take recycling a step further by rewarding those who recycle or by trying to separate nonrenewable waste from recyclable materials. I'm unsure of how to accomplish either of these ideas, but if they were developed further we could preserve our planet's resources for a longer period of time.
This is a good start but how many people are really going to take the time and look up where to take their old trash. Its much easier to just throw it away. Not everybody is concerned with the envirnment because they think it won't affect them in anyway. So why would they waste their time to find a place to recylce it?
ReplyDeleteYeah, basically, this app is crazy. For environmentally minded people, this can be a very handy tool. Even if you aren't minded that way, it is still handy to know where to take different waste such as paint or car batteries. I am also happy that the App Store has such a variety of apps. When I searched on the App Store, I found nearly 100 different environmental apps. This, I believe, truely backs up Apple's statement of, "There is an app for anything."
ReplyDeleteThis is great! a place to recycle car batteries? Heck yeah man. That is really something because many people just throw their car batteries away because there is not a recycling place around here. Yeah,is this website accessible to the general public? That is a big issue when it comes to recycling, the general public, even the ones that do not recycle daily can and might even recycle more often now.
ReplyDeleteI really like that app it is really cool. I am always trying to find some where to put car batteries and other junk around the house. There is just some many apps that make your life a little easier. And ever thing we can do for the environment can help so this app really comes in handy. Apple really is the best when it comes down to getting good apps.
