I think having a compost bin and rain barrel sale is a fantastic idea! I researched some prices of your average compost bin and some of them can be very pricy, while others are very affordable and still get the job done. Here’s a link to a few compost bins I came across. http://www.compostbins.com/compost-bins/compost-bins/12177+12185+4293040668.cfm I also believe hosting a compost bin and rain barrel sale can create more awareness of how useful these items can be. Compost bins are great for food scraps that we would typically discard in the trash, garden clippings, and even leaves and all of this can eventually turn into fertilizer for gardens and yards. Rain barrels are also a neat concept because they catch rain that is runoff and instead of people using their city or well water to water their plants, gardens, or even yards, they can use the water from their rain barrels. Both of these contraptions can help people save money and be eco-friendly!
I think this sale is a GREAT idea! However, I think there are positive and negative aspects of the location. If York County is having this sale, then why isn't it based IN York County? People may not want to drive all the way up to Charlotte to buy a compost bin or rain barrel if they could get one shipped to their house just as easily. On the other hand, this could draw attention to the people of Charlotte and encourage them to reduce their carbon footprint. My family and I have a compost tin; we put food trimmings and eggshells and coffee grinds in it then pour it out into our garden. We haven't really thought of getting a rain barrel yet but it's a pretty good idea. We know a family that uses worms to break down their unwanted food and they produce fertilizer twice as fast! I think that using worms is an awesome idea but I'd be a little hesitant to use them. I'm excited that our community has decided to participate in the Great American Clean Up! I'm glad that we've decided to be more environmentally conscious as a county, even though that may exclude Mr. Falls. :)
I wish I would have taken advantage of this opportunity. I come from a family (who live out in the country and have alot of wide open space) that likes to plant annual gardens. As a matter a fact, I believe my family planted out garden full of lettuce, corn, watermelons, etc... a week after this composting and rain barrel sell occurred. However, it would be not that hard for my family to aquire either of these. We have many bins and containers laying around for us to use. However, I think this sale was a great opportunity for people who don't have as much junk laying around.

it's good that we have a compost bin at the school because this will influence the kids that see this to get one at home. kari
