A school that focuses on environmental studies was built in Los Angeles and named after Al Gore. Ironically, this school was found to have been built on toxic ground. The ground it is built on was used to store storage tanks filled with hazardous material. It is also located near an oil well and near a groundwater source that has been contaminated by an oil field. I find this situation very ironic, funny, and sad.
It seems that while Al Gore was inventing the Internet and global warming, he seemed to have missed that a school was built in his name. Rachel Carson also receives name credit, but maybe she’ll handle the news better. The best part of this story is that it is actually an institute for environmental studies. Maybe the students will use the campus for experiments. All in all though, officials have strived to clean up the campus by testing the water and replacing the soil, but scientists argue contaminated groundwater can contaminate the clean soil. My suggestion, test the ground before you break it. The school was excellent idea, but the location was sub-standard.
