Philadelphia Eagles to Be Powered by On-Site Renewable Energy in 10 Months

The Philadelphia Eagles announced in November that they will be partnering with Solar-Blue energy to completely re-green their football stadium. Onsite wind turbines, solar panels, and a dual-fuel renewable energy plant, this stadium will be the only one worldwide that will be completely run on its own energy. The franchise is excited about this and this renovation will be completed by September 2011.

"The Eagles are partnering with Solar Blue, which will install the $30 million system consisting of 80 20-foot wind turbines (vertical, rather than bladed, to reduce noise and danger to nearby birds), 2,500 solar panels, and that 7.6-megawatt dual-fuel generation plant that'll be situated adjacent to the stadium. About 15 percent of the stadium's power will come from wind and solar, individually, with the remaining 70 percent coming from the plant. The plant is expected to create about 1.039 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year--enough to power 26,000 homes."

  1. I believe this is a great step forward for our country. Almost everyone in the country watches football and tons of little kids look up to the teams and players. People will see the great effort they are making and may want to follow in example or at least learn about these technologies. I think in the future we can expect to see more facilities like this one.

  2. I agree kelly! I think this is really great. Hopefully all of the other teams will do the same to their stadiums and it will show everyone that watches football that even they care about going green. And it will help alot with creating energy and saving money and pollution

  3. Although this is a good idea, I think they could put it to use in a better place that is used on daily basis and not just on weekends and game-day, a mall for example. Nonetheless, this is still a great step for society as well as the apparently new progressive NFL. How long will it take them to earn back their initial investment of $30,000,000?

  4. Levi, although they could put it in a more widely used place, think about how much energy it takes to run that stadium. The power bills must be immense and the CO2 emissions probably are too. Now the stadium is 100% efficient. Also this was a good choice because it is something EVERYONE will hear and talk about which could greatly raise awareness to the benefits of clean energy.
