Fashion designer, Alexander Julian, decided to give the University of North Carolina's regalia a makeover. Stating that since they were only worn once, the gowns should be made of recycled fabric. Working with Oak Hall Cap & Gown, he used 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles to create the country's first ever eco-friendly regalia. The new "True Blue" gowns cost around $55, only $5 more then the original gowns.
I think this is a very good idea and other colleges and high schools should look into switching to "green" material as well. Graduation is an important date in any students life, but after the ceremony, they're just left in the closet. So making them out of recycled material makes sense to me.
This is a brilliant idea, props! I think that this should be a practice that is used nationwide.
ReplyDeleteJostens needs to take note! This is a very creative and smart way of making graduation robes for students. Also, i agree with the statement that if they are only going to be worn once, why not make it out of recycled fabric. This is a very eco-friendly idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea! Gowns are not going to be worn except at a graduation ceremony so why waste so much material? If you actually think about how many students in the US graduate from high school and college, the number of gowns wasted would be insane! I think other high schools and college should definitely look into this.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool. It makes total sense. I was surprised about the price. Normally when you hear about something like this, it is way more money than the normal things but that's good that it is only 5 more dollars to help the environment. Think about it...our class (2011) has over 300 students, that's 5 dollars each, which makes over $1500 that is going to help the environment!
ReplyDeleteI think that this is an excellent idea!! Especially since the gowns are only worn once. It would be even better if they could do this with wedding/prom dress.
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! The gowns get worn once and after that who really cares about them anymore? Using recycled materials to make the gowns is great but couldn't we recycle the used gowns as well?
ReplyDeleteI love this idea of incorporating going green, or in this case “true blue, into a graduation ceremony. Not only do these new gowns look better, but students are helping the environment. If every school at both high school and university levels took the time to revamp their gowns in this same way, the impact made would greatly affect the status of our environment.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea. I think it's ridiculous that everyone isn't using recycled materials to make clothes only worn once!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea. If everyone used this idea, and used recycled fabric, it would be cheaper and benifit the environment.
