Hawaii's beaches are in retreat and its way of life may follow
Katie Nissen
The majority of beaches on Hawaii's three largest islands are eroding and is predicted to accelerate as sea level rises, said the United States Geological Survey. On average beaches lose about a few inches a year but the fact that some can lose a few feet is shocking and scary. Reports say that over the last century almost 9% of the coast has disappeared. Thats about 14 whole miles of beach gone! Dr. Fletcher says that to fix this problem we need to retreat from the beaches (structure-wise) and build buildings further from the coast. Although it is easy to say retreat it is much harder to implement it. "We don't define what rules and laws are written about coasts and exactly how they are managed," he said, "but this is information that can be factored into that process." I think that this needs to be considered and that we need to conserve all beaches for the future.

  1. This is really depressing! I LOVE the beach the fact that they are eroding is really sad. I wonder what is causing this. I wish there was something we could do for this! Now that we know that this is possible for the beaches to disapear, we need to be more careful and think of ways to conserve.

  2. This is really making me want to visit Hawaii even more before this continues. Its is really sad that the beaches are eroding. I wish it would talk more about what is causing this so we can find a way to stop it. It is really not right that is not being looked into more. Hawaii is such a large tourist attraction that we would loose a lot of money that brings into the U.S. Hopefully we can be more careful and look for a way to stop this endemic before it is too late. We are really on a time crunch here and someone should definitely look into it sooner the better.

  3. This is depressing like katie and ethan said because how can a state so beautiful and peaceful in a way be destroyed?! It isnt fair because i havent been there yet! even more reason to be depressed. I wish we knew how to stop this from happening, and i wish we didnt take things so lightly. WE need to react ASAP!
