A Mini-Eden for Endangered Orangutans

The dwindling population of Orangutans is now somewhere around 50,000. The reason for the decrease in the Orangutan population is the destruction of the rain forest that they live in. Orangutans used to live throughout all of South East Asia but now they are populated on a few islands in Indonesia. As the destruction of the Orangutans habitat the more and more they are starting to come in contact with humans. Since this is happening people are hunting them for food or to keep them away from there crops. Scientists are now using camp leaky which was a rehabilitation sight for orangutans, to bring the endangered orangutans too. This is one solution to the problem. A barrier could be that we can’t keep up with the deforestation and the orangutans will be killed before we can rescue them. I think that the people in Indonesia need to stop and look at what they are doing to the animal’s environment. The solution to bring them to camp leaky is a great idea because the apes won’t have to worry about their habitat being destroyed.

  1. I feel like this is a horrible thing to do to these orangutans. They dont deserve this just as people dont deserve for their homes to be destroyed because something "bigger" came along. I feel like this rehabilitation center is a great thing for these animals, but what if its not enough space? And not only the orangutans need the rain forest for living space, but so do all the other species who live there, and not just the animals, the plants as well. i agree with this blog, and i feel the people in indonesia need to realize what they are doing before its too late, there is only one camp? but how many orangutans need to be saved so they dont become extinct is my question.

  2. This is so awful. The Orangutans don't deserve to be treated the way they are being treated. It's not their fault that humans can't leave the rain forest alone and the animals that live their. If we have to destroy the rainforest, we need to make sure that the Orangutans have another place to go and are taken care of. Their population should not have to suffer because of the human population.
