MPAs Keeping Sea Turtles Safe

In this article the author discusses the effectiveness of marine protected areas for sea turtles. These areas are used to protect animals by prohibiting fishing or killing of the animals. Currently, 35% of the sea turtle population is in one of the many marine protected areas. This number is much higher than scientists expected because the number of marine protected areas in shallow waters is very small. There are different types of marine protected areas some are very strict on the regulations, these are used for science. Scientists studied the movement of 145 turtles, they found that the majority of the turtles ended up in a strictly enforced marine protected area. For a long time there was debate about whether marine protected areas were helpful, this research has shown that they are helping the turtle populations.

  1. I beilive that the scientist are surprised to find such large numbers of unprotected areas. I also think that what we can do to help is protect thses smaller areas. I belive that the turtles are a treasure and should be treated with love and care. the world would not be the same without them.

  2. I like this because it shows us how animals are geting smarter towards the humans and showing us that they understand where it is more safe to be on special circumstances. i also that with this information that scientist found that there will be more MPAs around in our oceans

  3. I am glad that scientist have taken action into protecting turtles. They are precious to our environment and we want them to stay. I think that the laws should include areas that are not just used for science. I think that we need to make more marine protected areas so then the turtle population won't decrease. The number of turtles that scientist have studied about the movement of turtles seems like a large amount. But just image if we created more marine protected areas and I wondered if that number would increase dramatically. Turtles are a awesome marine life and I don't understand why people would want to fish for them and then end up killing them. This is a horrible thought and I am glad that something is being done about it. I am glad that research scientist have conducted about the marine protected areas have shown that they have help the turtle population.
