A Study being performed by researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory shows the great significance of altering trees' genetic makeup. Increasing the plants
absorbency of light, researchers are also developing ways to allow plants to send more carbon into their roots. Such improvements to plants will
substantially boost the amount of carbon supplied by vegetation. If researchers are able to achieve such an advancement I believe they should make specific tree farms with just the genetically changed trees in which would be protected from harvesting.
I think that this is a good idea. This will allow more vegetation for the plants. The tree farms could help with the carbon in the atmosphere.I also think that if they are making genetically altered trees there are other genetically altered things they can do for humans such as ending certain illnesses.
ReplyDeleteWould altering their genetic make-up change the way they grow and affect other animal and plant species in that area?
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good idea. But at the same time how will genetically altering the make-up change the environment and the animals around it? Will it really make everything better? Yes it can make the trees absorb more light and send out more carbon but it might end up affecting the animals in a harmful way
ReplyDeleteI think this would be a very effective way to help areas suffering from deforestation. This does seem a bit vague though...how are the trees actually altered? Like, are there any known harmful effects of these genetically altered trees? Would the rate of carbon and sunlight being absorbed have a bad effect on other organisms in the area or the soil itself? On the other hand...soaking up more carbon could be better for "cleaning" the atmosphere of greenhouse gases.
ReplyDeleteChanging human genetics could lead to things such as birth defects. The risk is too high to genetically alter our makeup.
ReplyDeleteWhat is an advantage of genetically altering trees? What's the point? I personally think if it's not broke, don't fix it. Trees were made a certain way for a reason.
