Millions of viewers world-wide watched Prince William and Kate Middleton wed on April 29, 2011. However, the day will cause 12 times more carbon emissions then a whole year at the palace.
Majority of the guests will be arriving from abroad, so the traveling alone emits a large amout of CO2. Not to mention the countless civilians and tourists who traveled by bus and train to be a live participant in the wedding celebrations. And now we add in all the extra electricity added from the millions of world-wide viewers watching it on television at home and in bars everywhere. Not only was the Royal Wedding payed for by English tax-payers, it also contributed to Global Warming like nobody's business. Congrats to the newlyweds.
I have to say, even though this caused quite an increase in carbon emissions, it was a fabulous world wide event! It was quite a big ordeal, and with every national and country wide ordeal, there is bound to be some increase in different types of emissions. It is bound to have a negative impact on the environment, just because of the public's viewing of a certain event. But honestly, the wedding was beautiful! It doesn't happen that often, that royalty gets married, so I think once every 30 years is acceptable. And besides, we know that everyone saw some of the wedding in some way. So I say, congrats newlyweds!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kate. Even though a lot more electricity was used, this kind of event does not come around often. I'm sure that if research was completed for other events that have happened in the past such as the Olympics, the emissions produced and electricity used would be even greater. While it is essential to protect the environment, it is also important to be culturaly versed and experience events such as the royal wedding. However, looking at the way it impacts the environment, citizens should pay extra attention to how their actions effect our world in a negative way. By being smart about using electricity in every day life, the environment would be in much better shape.
ReplyDeleteThis is very true. Everytime I turned the television on or changed the channel, the royal wedding is all I saw that day. So much money and time was spent on one couples wedding. I believe all of the effort put into this wedding was not worth it. Why don't people spend that much money and passion into helping homeless or starving people?
ReplyDeleteThis was obviously a huge and happy worldwide event, but i also agree that it was blown out of proportion. Yes this was a historical event for England, but did it really need to be a huge historical day for the whole world? I have watched bits and peices of the wedding because that is really ALL that has been on tv lately. All of the people who flew there just to watch it in person does seem a little crazy to me, i'm sure they could have spent their time and money on something better.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was an awesome event. It was history and we got to watch it take place. And honestly, the only thing the tax payers paid for was the security. Everything else was paid for by the Royal Family. This kind of thing doesn't happen all the time. People still talk about Princess Dianne so why not make such a big deal about Princess Kate and Prince William. Sure they could have spent their money on other things, but what about the America things, like football, that other countries don't understand why we put such a big fuss up about. A lot of American travel to football games and the electricity to run those are probably way more than we think. So, we just have to respect other people's culture, and if the wedding of their Prince is a big deal, then who cares.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting way of looking at the royal wedding. I too agree with Kate that it was a great worldwide event and it was worth the extra emissions. There are not very many events that bring the world together the way the royal wedding did. Even though the environment may have been negatively affected I think it was worth it because these events do not happen very often.
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy! The news just wants one more negative thing to say about this happy couple! I think this event was wonderful, and if the millions of people weren't watching the wedding they would have been watching something else! It just so happens that the news wants to make the couple look bad and show just how much "global warming" they caused on their wedding day! CRAZY!
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting to see the data, but big events and travel are just a part of our life today. Maybe we should try to fix how much carbon vehicles give out during travel, but this idea has been around much longer than since the carbon footprint of the royal wedding came out.
ReplyDeleteThe Royal Wedding did cause a lot of things, but is it really that different from a regular wedding? Yes, more people, and a lot more CO2 was given off, but...people travel every day. People travel for almost no reason at all at times as well...It may have always been that way, but the Royal Wedding did some good, didn't it? We know the effects of big events, and how much CO2 is given off. Maybe, companies will try to change that from this event. Good things can happen from bad things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kimi. There may have been a lot of CO2 emmisions from the wedding, but those kinds of things happen all over the world every day. This was a special occasion, so I think it's understandable to have a little extravagance.
