Save the Whales!

In the past few years, there has been a spike in the number of whales washing up on shore without known cause. The National Marine Fisheries Service has claimed a Unusual Mortality Event in the Northern Gulf of Mexico, however, oil spills are not the only reason there has been more whales on shore, which scares experts. The number of whales ashore has been increasing throughout the years but peaked in 2009 with 46 beached whales. In response to this, the Department of Environment and Conservation is now conducting a study to look for possible causes. Researchers say that possible causes could be sonar issues leading them off course, the BP oil spill, or even nutritional issues. The oil spill is not fully to blame, in years previous there had been and increased amount of whales coming ashore globally. In the past week 16 whales have beached themselves in Florida. I think it is extremely important to find a leading cause for why the whales are increasingly becoming beached so then steps can be taken to prevent this from happening because most whales do not survive after coming ashore. Whales are extremely calm and interesting animals and I believe it should become a priority to help preserve them seeing as they have been around since prehistoric times and hold a significant place in history and evolution.

  7. Has it ever occured to anyone that whales are beaching because the humans excesssively trying to change nature? Oil spills, stuff being dumped into the ocean teh whole time. Ever heard of the earths meridean lines? All sea creatures and land uses these lines to migrate as well. Because we humans just do and dont think the earths meridean lines are changing. That is why I think they are bheaching, they are confused. What once used to be there no longer are. Just think about it!! Makes sence doesn't it?

  8. I think it's definitely an issue, and, in my opinion, I believe it's the LFA sonar developed by the U.S. Navy. The amplitude emitted by the LFA sonar is 240 decibels, enough to kill dolphins and whales. It causes the whale's ears to hemorrhage, leading them to become confused and scared, and they end up beaching themselves. This atrocity must be stopped. However, humans have the tendency to completely ruin something before they realize how precious it is.

  10. Probably due to chemicals running off into the ocean. Especially, roundup and chemicals found in weed killer that are not able to be broken down by the environment. After years of 100 million pounds that are sprayed each year, it is obvious that this alone can be the cause of the death of many animals and bugs, form bees to whales. As these chemicals can create havoc on the environment and cause the death of some animals directly and the death of some indirectly by the proliferation of algae which would kill off many of the bottom food chain in the sea.
Roundup should be banned and monsanto should be taken down and everyone involved should go to jail, from EPA to USDA to the top executives at Monsanto. As well as OCIP, and other pesticide prevention agencies.

  12. No one have right to kill any animal directly of indirectly. The government must take some urgent and necessary steps to stop this type of accidents.
