Over Seized Exotic Wildlife in Thailand

Trafficking is a major problem in the world, whether it's human trafficking or animal trafficking, it's still a problem. For Khao Pratubchang Thailand, they're known as a place for selling exotic animals. Although they don't want to be known for this, they can't help but have an international trade driven by the global market in exotic meats and rare pets. There are ways that they stop this though. There are shelters that they take these wildlife animals to after they have seized the animals from smugglers.

Over the past two years, officials here have captured more than 46,000 animals from traffickers, vendors and trappers, more than double the 18,000 seized the two previous years. With all the animals that they have confiscated, there is no place to put them since the shelters have become overpopulated. All these animals cost money to keep alive in these shelters and also how the animal is cared for (some animals are easier to be taken care of than others) is an issue that Thailand has to deal with for helping smuggled animals. I think that if there are more resources, these animals can be saved. It’s good that they haven’t harmed them and given them a place to stay.

  1. Trafficking is a big deal. Many pouters try to make a living by killing other, innocent organisms. I think that they should work with other countries to try to find a place for the animals to live. This would help keep the animals out of danger and prevent the shelters in Thailand from being overpopulated. The biggest step that I believe should be taken is stopping the hunters before they get to the animals. If this were to happen then the animals could live in their original habitat with others of their species. I think if this were to happen that all of the other problems would take care of themselves.

  2. I agree with kyle. I think that that pouters are going to have a very hard time to prevent from killing these animals.

  3. Animals are like people, if you kill one of them, you get the same impact of feelings as you would if someone were to die. Trafficking is illegal and the laws should be more strict.

  6. Im glad theirs a place for the animals to go to but finding them a place to live wouldn't be a problem if mankind wasn't so greedy in the first place.

  8. I really liked this article. My uncle used to work on a "cat farm" but it is really called the Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Indiana. It's really interesting because they take in animals that were pets mistreated or in unfit living environments. It's a really cool place to visit.

  9. If this continues will we see many species gone forever? Also what can we do to stop poachers its very hard to catch them without effecting the wildlife more.
