Resurrecting Extinct Species:The Debate Is On
This article debates whether de-extinction (the resurrection of extinct species through cloning) is possible. To revive an animal scientists must have DNA samples, then rearrange the DNA into a genome, then replace the genome of existing embryonic cells.
There must also be an existing similar animal to serve as the mother of the resurrected animal. This was actually done in 2003 but the animal died 10 minutes after birth from a genetic mutation. The debate goes one way saying that this would change environmental laws. If de-extinction is a success, humans could start to destroy more of the environment knowing that these animals can easily be reproduced. On the other hand de-extinction would let human beings return what they destroyed and redeem themselves from past mistakes. I believe we shouldn't do such a thing, this is how a zombie apocalypse begins, the day we start trying to revive human beings, you know it can happen. What’s gone is gone and we shouldn’t bring it back because human beings are just going to kill them off again one way or another, laws or not.

I think that it would be really cool if scientists could do this, but is it necessary? I'm sure they would spend millions of dollars on this research but if it's unsuccessful, all of that money has gone to waste. That's money that could go to AIDS research or Down Syndrome cures.
ReplyDeleteThis post was so cool. I've never given any thought to whether or not mammoths could ever exist or not, but it's interesting to see that people are trying.
ReplyDeleteI was willing to be on the side of bringing extinct animals back. Until you mentioned the zombie apocalypse, now I am totally against bringing them back.
ReplyDeleteProps to the people who try to do this, but I don't know if it could work.
