A 2,000-pound (907 kilogram), 14 foot (4.3 meter), great white shark nicknamed "Lydia" was tagged by scientists hoping to learn more about the behavior of sharks. Lydia was tagged and released in Florida waters. Lydia was not harmed when scientist tagged her. She was kept oxygenated by a hose of sea water.Tagging Lydia was the first step into discovering the life cycles of great white sharks.
While monitoring Lydia they'll be able to have a more understanding of how they live and reproduce. Shark populations are declining. To recognize that scientist are conducting a study without hurting the shark not only is a good way of researching, but it also expands the knowledge that most people have yet to know about the aquatic mammals living in the ocean.
Tagging animals is good for humans to do if they use the information they gather to their advantage. Often this information is gathered and not much help comes of it to the everyday lives of humans. I do not think that we should tag animals just to be tagging them but I do believe we should tag them if it will help us. In this case, knowing how a Great White Shark spends her time is helpful in the sense of tourism on the ocean and beach. Other than this safety reason I don’t see much use for this individual tag on this fish.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is much of a benefit of tagging animals. i don't think that they truly find the information they are looking for.
ReplyDeleteTagging an animal can be very risky. It seems like it harms the animal, but they are taken very carefully in this process. Most of the time researchers do benefit from what they find when they study animals.
ReplyDeleteI think our money can be put to better uses than tagging animals.
ReplyDeleteI think it can be helpful in finding out the information they want, but I do not believe that it benefits humans any by knowing these things.
ReplyDeleteI think that as long as they are tagging this shark to learn more about sharks as a whole, it should be allowed. This is vital because the shark population is declining and the only way that's going to be solved is figuring out the problem which is what they are trying to do.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it can be important to tag animals for migration patterns, I think it is generally a waste of time, effort, and money.
ReplyDeleteI’m sure we can find better methods then tagging animals
ReplyDeleteWe know very little about the great white sharks today. We still think they are man eating monsters of the sea. Tagging them will help us learn where they go, why, and more basic info.
