73 million is Too Much! Shark Finning

Shark finning is the practice of cutting off a shark’s fin then tossing the still alive and bleeding shark back into the water to drown or bleed to death. This un human like practice is due to the very high demand for shark fins.  The fins are worth up to 300 dollars per pound and the meat is far less valuable so the fisherman toss it over to save time and money.  Why is the price so high? It is high because of the highly sought after shark fin soup.  The soup has hardly any nutritional value and not much taste either.  In China the soup is eaten among many of their celebrations and in large quantities. Since China’s upper class is growing, so is the finning.  It is now a huge threat because last year 73 million sharks were killed in the process.  They’re at the top of the food chain and their population reproduces very slowly.  This is really not good for the species and they could go extinct in up to 10 years.  It is taking place near every coast of every continent.  Almost all countries do not have rules and laws against finning.  Europe, the US, and South Africa are the only ones that do.  I think that there are many solutions out there.   People in general can just stop eating the un-tasteful soup.  People don’t know that this is happening, that’s the thing.  I think that if word is spreads and if people see the true process they will learn and know better than to put sharks in danger.  Laws and regulations should be set in all countries.  Fines need to be set because this is by far one of the cruelest things humanity is doing.  Celebrities are helping by spreading the word and supporting the stoppage.

  1. In my personal opinion this is another food plate i find very unappealing, just like turtle, snake, snails and other creature i dont think should be eaten. I thought that shark meat was very unhealthy for the human body and contained high levels of mercury, is the fin any different? Also why is it always mostly asian countries that do things to harm aquatic animals such as whales and dolphins, I'm not a big fan of sharks but they shouldn't be slaughtered just for the joy of winning money. Also i agree more laws should be in forced to save the population that spices is on this earth for a reason.
