Toward Reducing the Greenhouse Gas Emissions of the Internet and Telecommunications

Researchers from the Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications have found that the information communication and technology industry produce about 2% of all COannually, and that this number is expected to double by 2020.  The researchers have discovered that it may be possible to build more energy efficient models to cut back on these emissions.  They have developed and tested two different devices already on a simulated network, and on a deployed network.  Both of the devices showed promising results and research will continue to reduce the amount of emissions that the information communication and technology industry release into the atmosphere.  I am very excited to hear about this and support this research completely.  I applaud those who constantly work to make our planet cleaner and healthier for the people of the Earth.

  1. As someone who wants to pursue a career in Telecommunications, I find this article very fascinating! I do, however, have a question in regards to the information presented in the article. First I must say that I am shocked that of all industries to contribute to carbon emissions at this day in age, telecommunications has been leading it by this much. My question is, if it is easy to track who contributes what in terms of carbon emissions, how can we be certain that communication equipment really is causing the damage it is when there are so many more industries that have lead carbon emissions to what they are now?
