EPA Plans to Clean the Gowanus Canal

The Gowanus Canal which flows through Brooklyn is on of our most polluted waterways. It's been around for decades and much of the areas run off flows into it. The canal itself empties out into the harbor. The cost of cleaning this canal will be roughly half a billion dollars. The benefits out way the costs though because the entire area around it is being revitalized. The EPA expects it to have a positive affect on the community and local economy. This is also good news for the environment because heavy amounts of city pollution will no longer be dumped into the oceans. To clean the canal, the EPA is removing all contaminated sediment. To prevent future pollution they are adding new sewer lines and capping it with clean sand.
