Fire and Ice: Wildfires Darkening Greenland Snowpack, Increasing Melting

Satellite observations have revealed the first direct evidence of smoke from Arctic wildfires drifting over the Greenland ice sheet, damaging the ice with soot and making it more likely to melt under the sun. The problem is that ice sheets in Greenland (as well as Antarctica) are already melting at an alarming rate, but with the addition of forest fires increasing melting more ice, the results can go nowhere but down. A possible solution to this problem could be actively suppressing forest fires in Greenland at first sight and minimizing susceptibility for more to occur in the near future. My opinion on this issue is this isn't a matter of how to suppress forest fires, rather a matter of when, because forest fires melting ice sheets couldn't have occurred at a worse time given that greenhouse gases have already taken their toll on melting ice all over the world and should be dealt with immediately.
