Surprising Depths for Coral Reefs

During continued exploration of the Great Barrier Reef off the cost of Australia, scientists have discovered using remote submarines the deepest coral they have found there yet: 410 feet down. This reef is known for its brilliant colors and coral at merely 100 feet so the recent discovery was shocking to say the least. Though coral living this deep is not unheard of it was still a big deal in the scientific community. They found coral in the Gulf of Mexico over 2,000 feet below the ocean’s surface. These discoveries show us how we really don’t know much of what’s in our oceans. This is good new though, because over half of the Great Barrier reef has disappeared in the last 27 years. Perhaps coral can be hardier than we thought.
